Odisha has one of the largest concentrations of tribal population in the whole country. The Kondha or Kandha is the largest tribe. They have a population of about one million and are based mainly in the Kandhamal and adjoining districts namely Rayagada, Koraput, Balangir and Boudh. The Bonda, are known as 'the Naked People',and have a population and live in Koraput. The most tribal people ate basically working people, working to gather food and fuel or engaged in agriculture which is often at a primitive level or maybe in some primitive craft: Their work is usually of subsistence type. The Adivasis may not be the so-called gentlemen, for they have to dig and delve, slash and sow or ,pin and weave, but their uncomplicated Adamic approach to life and the basic human virtues, which constitute the hallmark of their integrated culture is fit for emulation, if feasible, by our acquisitive society. The houses of the Santal and Ho tribes have their walls decorated in pretty colours and painted with figures of animals, birds and flowers. The doors of the Kondh houses are skillfully carved with traditional figurines. The Saora ikons drawn on their walls are highly appreciated. The tribal crafts are simple and artistic. The common items of manufacture are baskets, head dresses, textiles, combs, necklaces, bangles, earrings and articles with artistic specialty for use by tribal communities.
